Resolution on non-citizen voting rights:

Whereas, the Peace and Freedom Party platform calls for full political rights for non-citizen residents; and

Whereas, a substantial proportion of San Francisco residents are non-citizens (as are an even higher percentage of parents of public school students); and

Whereas, it is a violation of the democratic rights of all residents of a community, not just those excluded, when a substantial proportion of their neighbors are prevented from voting in local elections;

Therefore, the Peace and Freedom Party State Central Committee endorses the San Francisco ballot measure to grant voting rights in school board elections to non-citizen parents of students in public schools; and

Further, we call on all charter cities and charter counties, especially those with substantial immigrant populations, to grant voting rights in local elections to non-citizen residents; and

Further, we call on the state legislature to pass legislation granting voting rights in local elections to all non-citizen residents of California.

[Passed by the State Central Committee of the Peace and Freedom Party of California, 1 August 2004.]
